Where your notes live
Lumark is local-first: every note is a plain Markdown file in your user's application data directory. Nothing is uploaded anywhere.
Location
- Windows
- macOS
- Linux
%APPDATA%\com.albertarakelyan.lumark\notes\
Paste that path into the File Explorer address bar to open it. It usually expands to C:\Users\<you>\AppData\Roaming\com.albertarakelyan.lumark\notes\.
~/Library/Application Support/com.albertarakelyan.lumark/notes/
In Finder, press Cmd + Shift + G and paste the path.
~/.local/share/com.albertarakelyan.lumark/notes/
If you've set XDG_DATA_HOME, look under $XDG_DATA_HOME/com.albertarakelyan.lumark/notes/ instead.
Layout
Each folder in the app is a directory, and each note is a .md file inside it:
notes/
├── general/
│ ├── Shopping list.md
│ └── Ideas.md
└── work/
└── Meeting notes.md
Other files you may see next to the notes directory are created by the app's web engine and can be ignored.
Backing up
Copy the whole notes directory somewhere safe: an external drive, a sync folder, or a Git repository. To restore, quit Lumark and copy the directory back.
Since notes are plain files, any backup or sync tool you already use will work with them.
Upgrading from an older version
Older versions of Lumark stored notes directly in the app data directory, or loose in notes/ without a folder. On startup, Lumark moves any such notes into the general folder. If a note with the same name already exists there, the moved copy is renamed (for example Ideas (2).md) so nothing is overwritten.
